Employer Matching Gift Programs
Thousands of corporations in the United States and Canada have matching-gift
programs that benefit educational institutions like Indiana Institute of
Technology.
The original matching gift program was developed in 1954 at General Electric.
Philip Reed, chair of the General Electric Board of Directors, wanted to
encourage GE employees to contribute to their alma maters and felt that the
incentive to contribute was greater if the company matched the employee's gift.
Since 1954, employers and their employees have contributed over $2 billion to
education.
Today, matching-gift programs have expanded. Some companies will match
volunteer hours, many will match their subsidiary companies' employees' giving,
and most companies will match their retirees' giving.
It is very possible that your employer matches your contributions. Companies
typically match at a 1:1 rate, meaning for every dollar you give, the company
will give a dollar! Some employers will match at a slightly lower rate and some
at an even greater level!
The process to have your gift matched is very easy and requires little or no
extra effort. In most cases, you just pick up a simple form from your
personnel office, fill it out, and send it to Indiana Tech. Indiana Tech then
verifies the gift and sends it back to your employer for you!
Increase the impact of your gift! Ask your employer if your company is a
matching gift company today! Or call our office to find out more.
