Miami, Fla. -- The Indiana Tech volleyball team got the 2013 season started on the right foot with a five set victory over the host Bobcats at the St. Thomas Invitational on Thursday night.
The Warriors lost their first set 14-25, but bounced back to take set two 25-14. After dropping the third 20-25, the orange and black bounced back to take the final two sets 25-17 and 15-7.
Two Warriors tallied double-digit kills on the night led by junior Christine Foest (Welland, Ontario) who had 15 while senior Suzanna Taylor (Petersburg, Mich.) tallied 11. Freshman Cassie Sarabia (Rossford, Ohio) had nine while junior Stacy Nagy (Temperance, Mich.) added eight. Leading the team in assists for the night was freshman Alexandra Roberts (New Washington, Ohio) with 23 while senior Kelsey Fitzpatrick (Holland, Ohio) added 19. Freshman Taylor Kelso (Crestline, Ohio) led the team with 20 digs on defense and Sarabia tallied an additional 18. Junior Shanice Richards (Boynton Beach, Fla.) led the way with three blocks with four others registering one each.
"Tonight's win was a great start to our season," said Head coach Kourtney Volkmer. "A lot of kids stepped up and played well. We have three more hard games ahead of us this weekend and I'm excited to see the development throughout the tournament and season."
The orange and black return to the court tomorrow morning when they face #19 Lindsey Wilson in the first of two matches on Saturday at the St. Thomas Invitational.
