Miami, Fla. -- The Indiana Tech volleyball team faced some tough competition on Friday at the St. Thomas Invitational and took both matches to five sets, however, they couldn't pull out the wins and fell to 1-2 on the season.
The Warriors fell behind early to the 19th-ranked Blue Raiders of Lindsey Wilson, dropping set one 18-25 and set two 16-25, but the resilient orange and black fought back to take sets three and four 25-18 and 25-17, respectively. They couldn't keep the momentum though, dropping the final set 10-15.
Junior Christine Foest (Welland, Ontario) once again led Tech in kills with 11 and added 12 digs while senior Suzanne Taylor (Petersburg, Mich.) tallied 10 kills as well. Freshman Alexandra Roberts (New Washington, Ohio) led the team with 18 assists and senior Kelsey Fitzpatrick (Holland, Ohio) added 13 for the Warriors.
Freshmen Cassandra Sarabia (Rossford, Ohio) and Taylor Kelso (Crestline, Ohio) had 14 and 10 digs respectively, while junior Stacy Nagy (Temperance, Mich.) tallied a team high five blocks while Sarabia, Taylor and junior Shanice Richards (Boynton Beach, Fla.) each had two.
It was a much different start in match two, however, the outcome remained the same as the Warriors lost in five sets (25-15, 25-22, 12-25, 23-25, 10-15) to Kansas Wesleyan after taking a 2-0 lead.
Taylor led the team with 13 kills while Foest tallied 12 and Nagy added 10. Roberts once again led the team in assists with 26 and Fitzpatrick tallied 17.
Kelso made 20 digs in the five sets while Foest added 10 for the Warriors. However, Tech tallied just six blocks with Richards and Taylor recording two each.
“Today we suffered a couple tough losses, but it was a great challenge,” stated Head Coach Kourtney Volkmer. “It was great to see some of our athletes step up, we have a lot of potential. It’s a long road to conference, that’s why we play these tough games early in the season. In the long run, it will make us a stronger team.”
The Warriors conclude play at the St. Thomas Invitational on Saturday at 10 a.m. with a match against Missouri Baptist. For live video and stats, click here.
