FORT WAYNE, Ind. – As part of the Warrior Pride program, each month the athletic department will name one male and one female athlete the Warrior of the Month. Athletes can earn recognition for their hard work on the field, excellence in the classroom or being active in their community.
The Warrior of the Month Award winners for the months of Sept. and Oct. are Wiebke Schlender of the women’s golf team and Aaron Belcher of the men’s cross country team.
Schlender, a freshman from Paderborn, Germany, has been outstanding for the Warriors as she has won seven of the nine events she has competed in, placing second and 10th in the other two events. She was the WHAC Women’s Golfer of the Year, leading the Warriors to the Regular Season Championship crown and the right to host the WHAC Championship in the spring. She also currently leads the NAIA in birdies with 32 and is 11th in average score, averaging 76 strokes per round.
Belcher, a senior from Moorseville, Ind., has been the team’s top runner in every race this season and was selected as the WHAC Cross Country Runner of the Week twice. His time of 25:21 for the 8-kilmeter race makes him the second fastest male in program history. He is currently seeded third in the conference which qualifies him for nationals for the third straight season. He has also excelled in the classroom with a cumulative GPA of 3.7 earning him NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors.
