The Athletic Department at Indiana Tech is pleased to announce a partnership with the Fort Wayne Women’s Bureau. Tech and FWWB are working together on a program called Coaching Boys Into Men. “Domestic and sexual violence against women are pervasive problems in our society. In college athletics we are coaching life skills as much or more than sport. We want our coaches to address this issue head on with our student/athletes. This program will help educate student/athletes and provide them with useful information, messages, and anecdotes to take this issue on”, says Indiana Tech Athletic Director Jeff Walker.
The sexual assault statistics for women in college are frightening. Statistics tell us that 1 in 5 women will be assaulted during her college years. It is important to teach women how to keep themselves safe but it is also necessary to engage men into the solution as well.
“The Fort Wayne Women’s Bureau is so excited to begin a collaboration with Indiana Tech with the Coaching Boys into Men program. Sexual assault is not an easy topic to talk about and discuss but the staff at Indiana Tech understands the complexity and importance of this issue and wants to be part of the solution!” said Abigail Widmer, Director of the Rape Awareness programs for FWWB.
Patti Van Leuven, COO,( and the interim CEO) said that “ we are excited about new collaborative relationships in the community that Coaching Boys to Men represents. Men need to be an integral part of the solving the sexual violence issue in every community.”
