Fort Wayne, IN – Athletes from the Indiana Tech men’s soccer, men's and women's golf, and softball teams had the opportunity to volunteer at Adams Elementary School on Thursday, participating in the school’s Blessings in a Backpack program. Teams from the Warrior Athletic Department will visit the school every second Thursday through May.
“We share the same neighborhood and it is important that we have a positive impact on the community in which we study, live, and work,” said men’s soccer coach David Bokhart. “I think the student-athletes recognized the significance of this program and how vital it is to the health and welfare of the Adams Elementary students.”
Blessings in a Backpack is a program that provides meals for children who may otherwise go hungry on the weekends throughout the school year. The program is operated completely by volunteers and backpacks, as well as the weekly food, are purchased with donated funds. Volunteers deliver the food to the schools and pack the backpacks each week so that every Friday students go home with these filled backpacks, knowing they will have food for the weekend. Students return their backpacks each Monday for the next Friday’s distribution.
