For Immediate Release
Fort Wayne, Ind. – The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has once again recognized Indiana Tech as a Champions of Character Five Star Award recipient for advancing character-driven athletics.
The award recognizes institutions and conferences that are active in the NAIA's Champions of Character program which emphasizes the five core values - integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship, and servant leadership.
Indiana Tech, who has earned the award every year since the initiative began in 2000-01, continues to show its dedication to the program through its own Warrior Pride. Tech’s coaches and student-athletes have completely embraced what it means to be a person of character in the classroom, on the field, and in the community.
Last year, 90 Warrior student-athletes were named to the Academic All-Conference Team and 56 qualified as NAIA Scholar-Athletes. Additionally, eleven Warrior teams qualified as NAIA Scholar Teams by maintaining a GPA of at least 3.0.
Along with the success in the classroom, the Warriors excelled on the field finishing in second place for the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) All-Sports Trophy, capturing four WHAC championships during the year.
Tech student-athletes are also heavily involved in their community, volunteering with Fort4Fitness, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Blessings in a Backpack, DASANI Buddy Walk, and many more.
Indiana Tech was one of 11 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference member schools to receive the award and the WHAC also received the Five Star Conference Award.
The award is given annually to institutions scoring 60 or more total points on the NAIA Champions of Character Scorecard., which gives points for character training, conduct in competition, academic focus, character recognition and character promotion. Institutions also earned points based on exceptional student-athlete grade point averages and by obtaining zero ejections during competition throughout the course of the academic year.
More than 80 percent of the NAIA institutions scored at least 60 points on the Champions of Character Scorecard. All 23 athletic conferences achieved Five Star status. The NAIA’s scorecard was created to provide institutions with a checklist of measurable goals on their commitment and utilization of the five core character values -- respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship -- the association embraces.
