Fort Wayne, Ind. – As part of the Warrior Pride program, each month the athletic department will name one male and one female athlete the Warrior of the Month. Athletes can earn recognition for their hard work on the field, excellence in the classroom, or being active in their community.
The Warrior of the Month Award winners for the month of January are Melvin Brooks of the men’s basketball team and Kaneisha Bass of the women’s basketball team.
Melvin Brooks, a senior from Memphis, Tennessee, led the team to a 7-3 record for the month averaging a team-best 16.3 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. He scored a career-high 28 points against Madonna University on Jan. 16 and recorded four double-doubles during the month. On the year, Melvin is the team’s leading scorer and rebounder with 14.5 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. He also leads the conference in rebounding.
Kaneisha Bass, a senior from Detroit, Michigan, is the starting “4” player for the Lady Warriors and is averaging 8.5 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. “Although she is not our leading scorer, she is an instrumental part of this team going in the right direction,” said Head Coach Jessie Biggs. “She is the first one on the floor for practice and the last one off the bus to make sure everything is picked up and orderly. She has bought in and supported the new way of doing things for this program 100%.”
Congratulations to Melvin and Kaneisha!
