Allentown, Pa. – The Indiana Tech bowling teams concluded their 2011-12 campaign over the weekend at the United States Bowling Congress Intercollegiate Team Sectionals at AMF Parkway Lanes. The Warriors competed well against some of the most talented teams in the nation, with the men’s team finishing in 11th place and the women in 14th.
Webber International University took home the top spot in both the men’s and women’s tournaments. Only the top four teams in each of the four sectional qualifiers advanced to the USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships held at Sun Valley Lanes in Lincoln, Nebraska on April 19-21.
In the USBC Intercollegiate Singles Sectional Tournament, eight Warrior men competed in the 140-person field where only the top six qualified for the Singles Championship. Freshman Travis Valentine (Leslie, MI/Mason) who captured 32nd place was the highest among the Indiana Tech men, finishing with 1,197 pins and a 199.5 average. In his final game, Valentine bowled a 275, the third highest score in the tournament. Devin Arick and Jaiden Metzger (Ft. Wayne, IN/Snider) followed in 58th and 66th place respectively. Arick piled up 1,148 pins for a 191.3 average while Metzger collected 1,117 pins for a 186.2 average.
Only the top four advanced in the field of 114 women’s bowlers, who were also represented by eight Warriors. Senior Alicia Bowman (Indianapolis, IN/Warren Central) was Tech’s top finisher, landing in 48th place with 1,089 pins and a high game of 212. Sophomore Mary Woehnker (Kendallville, IN/East Noble) was close behind in 56th place with 1,069 total pins and a 178.2 average.
The Warriors accomplished something few programs have ever done by qualifying for the postseason tournaments in only their second year of existence. The program’s future looks bright with so much young talent returning and will look to build off the success next season.
