Grand Rapids, Mich. – The NAIA Great Lakes Challenge, hosted by conference-rival Aquinas College, is the biggest meet the Warrior cross country teams have, and will, run this season and features many of the top programs in the country. With 350 runners in the men’s race, and 335 runners in the women’s race, both teams struggled to find their pace in such a massive group. Over 30 complete teams were present as each team accepted this challenge.
Sam Bird (Columbia City, IN/Northrop) finished first on the men’s side in their 8k race, but was running unattached. Junior Aaron Belcher (Mooresville, IN/Mooresville) was the first for the scoring for the Warriors, and finished in a time of 25:56.
Rounding out the scoring for the men were freshman Marcus Hobbs (Nineveh, IN/Indian Creek), senior Matt Kimbrell (Muncie, IN/Muncie Southside), freshman Zack Johnson (Mishawaka, IN/Penn), sophomore Aaron Kimbrell (Muncie, IN/Muncie Southside), freshman Paul Watts (Granger, IN/Penn), and freshman Brenden Zoltek (Columbia City, IN/Columbia City).
The team finished in 10th place out of 34 complete teams. They finished ahead of St. Ambrose University, who have been receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25 Poll, and finished a mere three points behind Olivet Nazarene University.
On the women’s side, sophomore Cherie Gaines (Farmington Hills, MI/North Farmington) paced the Warriors running a 5k lifetime-best 19:04. Freshman Brenna Conger (Packwood, IA/Pekin) lost her shoe in the first 50 meters of the race due to the amount of people coming off the starting line, but still managed to run a solid 19:31.
Also scoring for Tech was junior Becca Lamb (North Ridgeville, OH/North Ridgeville), senior Aubree Reichel (Puyallup, WA/Wiesbaden), and juniors Ashlee Satterfield (Marengo, IN/Crawford County), Tabitha Vermillion (Marion, IN/Marion), and Allycia Gaffer (Ft. Wayne, IN/Northrop).
The women placed 14th out of 32 complete teams.
Up next, the cross country teams will compete against the other teams of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference in the final meet of the season at the WHAC Championships on Nov. 3 at Riverside Park in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
