Fort Wayne, IN – After a subpar year as a team, the 2010 Tech XC runners look to return to national prominence on the strength of nine returners who have competed at the NAIA national level. The group is not even two years removed from top 10 finishes at Nationals for both the men and women. However, a new coaching staff and more than a dozen new additions to the roster means that this year's squad will be looking to make their own reputation by the end of November.
The team will look to capitalize on a revamped schedule that will let them see more area competition and help to prove their worth amidst other Indiana running programs. The schedule includes meets at IPFW, Purdue, and Indiana Wesleyan. The ultimate goal of running at Nationals would put them far from home, though, as the 2010 NAIA Nationals will be held in Vancouver, Washington.
Key returners on the men's side include senior Derek Holst (Columbia City, IN / Whitko) who ha s an 8k personal best of 26:09. Derek is extremely disciplined and looking be a leader on such a young team. Another key holdover from the previous national team is senior John Wainwright (Wolcottville, IN / Lakeland) who boasts a 25:20 PR and happens to be incredibly focused and highly motivated in terms of his training. Sophomore Cody White (Decatur, IN / Heritage) has gone 25:40 and remains a highly respected, impact runner on the team.
The women's team is also blessed to be led by a talented group of upperclassmen. Senior Kara Van Horn (Roanoke, IN / Huntington North) has posted an 18:24 5k and naturally leads by example. Senior Alyssa Webb (Indianapolis, IN / Lawrence Central) has gone 18:39 over the same distance and brings a very positive attitude to the group. Junior Veronica Jersey (South Whitley, IN / Whitko) adds to the wealth of experience while also having ran 19:03.
"This year's group will certainly not lack talent. Their challenge will be regaining the winning edge that they had two years ago. It will start with disciplined training and end with selfless exertion on race days." - Coach Josh Wolfe
