Marion, IN -- The Indiana Tech Men’s and Women’s teams traveled to the campus of Indiana Wesleyan for their latest contest. The meet featured 8 women’s teams and 10 men’s teams.
The Indiana Tech women finished 2nd overall, by only 13 points behind #16 ranked Indiana Wesleyan with a 29 to 44 score. The Indiana Tech women ran great races across the board and were lead once again by senior Mika Davis (Modoc, IN/Union Modoc HS) in a new lifetime best of 18:55 breaking her previous best of 19:27, which was good enough for 5th overall. Right Behind her in 6th was fellow senior Kara Van Horn (Huntington, IN/Huntington North HS) in 19:01, bettering her season best time by nearly a minute.
Freshman Becca Lamb (Ridgeville, OH/North Ridgeville HS) continues to impress as she ran a lifetime best of 19:05 and finished 9th overall. Juniors Veronica Jersey (South Whitley, IN/Whitko HS) and Hilary Snyder (Michigan Center, MI/Lumen Christi HS) rounded out the Indiana Tech scoring with times of 19:22(15th) and 19:31 (17th), both of which are significant improvements over their previous two races. Continuing the trend were the 6th and 7th place lady Warriors of sophomore Preosha Graham-Coats (Ft. Wayne, IN/Harding HS) in 19:59 and junior Domi Elizondo (Indianapolis, IN/Pike HS) in 20:02. Preosha’s previous best was 20:30 and Domi had never before broken 21 minutes. Freshman Ashlee Saterfield (Marengo, IN) also had a great race as she ran a lifetime best of 20:34, almost 90 seconds better than her previous best time.
Overall the women showed the progress the coaches have been looking for. The women made a great showing again versus a nationally ranked team and set themselves up for a big month ahead. The women displayed the effort that it will take to compete for a conference championship come November.
The Men’s team fell short of their goal of winning the invite by 9 points, finishing in 3rd with 64 points. Just behind St. Josephs (57) and Marian (55). The Warriors were lead by senior John Wainwright (Wolcottville, IN/Lakeland HS) in 25:45 good enough for 5th overall. Junior Matt Kimbrell (Muncie, IN/Muncie South HS) continued to drop time all the way down to 25:46 bettering his previous PR of 26:40 and good enough for 7th overall. Coming in a nearly dead heat of 26:01 were senior Derek Holst (Columbia City, IN/Whitko HS) in 10th and sophomore Cody White (Decatur, IN/Heritage HS) in 11th. Holst previous personal best was 26:09.
The men were searching for a 5th man and junior Micky Nelson (Wheat Ridge, CO/Wheat Ridge HS) wanted to prove he is ready to take the spot with a lifetime best 27:17, bettering his previous personal best of 27:45. The men had first place Marian beat 29-33 through 4 runners and the improvement of Nelson gives the coaches great hopes for reducing their pack time. They continue to improve every meet and are looking to peak for a very talented and challenging Conference meet in November.
The Indiana Tech Cross country teams will be back in action on October 23rd at 11 a.m. at the NAIA Great Lakes Challenge. The meet will feature all conference opponents and many of the best NAIA schools from across the Midwest.
