Fort Wayne, Ind. – Former Warrior standout Brandon Alger (Leo, IN/Leo) has been named the Northwest League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending July 8.
Alger earned the honor after posting a record of 1-0 last week. In two appearances, the 21-year old left-hander tossed six shutout innings and allowed just one hit while issuing no walks and recording seven strikeouts.
Alger is off to a spectacular start in his professional career with the Eugene Emeralds and dominating the Northwest League. He has appeared in five games, with two starts, owning a 2-0 record and has yet to allow an earned run. In his 14 innings worked, Alger has only surrendered six hits while fanning 13 without walking a batter. Right-handers are now 4-for-39 (.103) against him this season.
The Eugene Emeralds are the short-season Class A affiliate of the San Diego Padres. Alger became the third player drafted out of Indiana Tech when the Padres selected him in the 26th round of the 2012 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft last month.
In his final season at Indiana Tech, Alger was named the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Pitcher of the Year after posting an 8-2 record with a 2.37 ERA. He recorded 80 strikeouts in 91 innings pitched and opponents hit just .225 against him. His eight wins were tied for the most in the WHAC, and he allowed the fewest runs in the league while ranking second in strikeouts, third in ERA, and fourth in opponents batting average.
In two seasons with the Warriors, Alger was 13-6 with a 3.01 ERA and finished among Indiana Tech’s all-time leaders in strikeouts with 128.
