The Indiana Tech Warriors baseball team traveled to Chillicothe, Ohio, to play Shawnee State University in a 3-game series. The weekend showed the Warriors bounce back twice from 2-run deficits, however only winning one of the two. The Warriors’ loss came once again in the bottom of the 7th. This is the Warriors’ 3rd loss of the season that occurred in the bottom frame.
Game 1 had a pitching duel with Shawnee State’s pitcher Compton and Indiana Tech’s Junior Israel Martinez. With Shawnee State leading in the top of the 7th, the Warriors scored twice to take the game into extra frames. With one out and two walks to seniors Will Richards and Keegan McCamment, junior Lance Hanmer hit a double to score Richards. Junior catcher Elliott Pisarczyk then hit a ground ball up the middle to score McCamment. After both teams scored once in the 8th, the Warriors opened it up with a 3-run 9th. In similar fashion with the 7th inning, both Richards and McCamment were walked. After a sacrifice bunt from Hanmer, Pisarczyk hit a double to score both runs. Senior Elijah Chee hit a single to score the final run of the inning. Freshman pitcher Daniel Puckett pitched 3 innings of relief for his first collegiate victory. Sophomore Todd Phillips pitched the final inning to get his second save of the season.
Game 2 was another seesaw battle showing the Warriors score twice in the top of the 2nd to take a 2-0 lead. However, Shawnee State answered back with 2 runs of their own in the bottom half. The Warriors were held scoreless until the top of the 7th, trailing 4-2. Richards and Hanmer scored on Pisarczyk’s fielder’s choice and Chee’s base hit. However, for the third time this season the Warriors were defeated during the opposing teams last at bat. A costly throwing error with two outs hurt the Warriors as the Bears knocked in the winning run from 2nd on a single to left field.
Game 3 showed the Warriors down 2-0 after the bottom of the first. McCamment led off the top of the 2nd with his first of three doubles of the afternoon. Hanmer walked followed by singles from Chee and sophomore designated hitter Riley Muhlenkamp. After a single by senior outfielder Steve Dowding and hit-batsman on senior Steve Weigle, the bases were loaded for junior catcher Gordon Murphy. Murphy cleared the bases with his first of two triples on the day. Senior pitcher Eric Sherrill would settle down by completing 4 shutout innings before handing the ball over to junior Zach Palmer. The Warriors would have a 6-2 lead going into the 5th. The Indiana Tech ball club would score 4 more in the 5th to make it a 10-2 lead. Senior pitcher John Paul Akers and junior John Toschlog pitched the final 3 innings to complete the victory for the Warriors with a final score 10-3.
The Warriors will be on the field again this weekend. It is scheduled to open up at home on Saturday the March 7 vs. Anderson University. However, depending on the weather, the game could be moved or postponed to another date. Please check the web site for updates throughout the week. On Sunday, March 8, the Warriors will head to New Albany, Ind., to play Indiana University Southeast.
