Fort Wayne, Ind. – Indiana Tech head men’s basketball coach Al Grushkin is proud to announce four recent signings to his 2012 recruiting class. Among the four are three Indiana natives, including two freshmen.
Signing with the Warriors for next season were Justin Reid, Antwan Cathey, Kris Housley, and Tanner Todd.
Justin Reid joins the Warriors from Missouri Western State University, where he averaged eight points and six rebounds per game. At one time, the 6-8, 250-pound post player was being recruited by Providence, Indiana State, and Saint Louis University.
Originally from Indianapolis, Reid played at North Central High School where he was an All-State and All-Conference performer, as well as the Circle City Classic MVP after scoring 19 points and grabbing 14 boards in the championship game.
After high school, Reid played at Kankakee Community College where he was an All-Region selection and guided his team to the Region IV Championship. Midstatehoops.com rated him as the 16th best Junior College sophomore.
“Justin is strong and powerful with long arms,” said Grushkin. “He can be a load in the post, but also has the skill to step out and shoot the ball. We are thrilled to have him join us.”
Antwan Cathey transfers in to Indiana Tech from Eastern Oklahoma State College, where the 6-6, 230-pound forward averaged eight points and six rebounds per contest. He started every game for the Mountaineers and led the team to a 51-16 record while climbing as high as No. 4 in the national rankings.
The Memphis, Tennessee native averaged 15 points and 11 rebounds per game while playing at Memphis Trezevant High School for Coach Harold Johnson. He was a Class A Double A All-City player and was a Tennessee Prep Hoops 8AA Honorable Mention All-Region Team member. Hoop Scoop had Cathey rated as the No. 35 sophomore in the class of 2012 in Tennessee. He was also named the Athlete of the Year at Trezevant his senior season, where he lettered in Football, Basketball and Track & Field.
Coach Grushkin on Antwan Cathey: “Antwan is physically gifted. He is big, strong, and athletic. He runs extremely well and his best days are still ahead as an offensive factor. We are excited with his potential.”
The Warriors will also welcome incoming freshmen Kris Housley and Tanner Todd.
The 5-11, 170-pound Housley was an All-Conference and All-City Honorable Mention selection at Scecina Memorial High School in Indianapolis. He led the team in field goal percentage and scoring with 20 points per game while also averaging seven rebounds. In addition to his accomplishments on the court, Housley was also a terrific student, graduating with academic honors and earning the outstanding student award.
Coach Grushkin on Kris Housley: “Kris is very athletic and can play at all perimeter positions. He is an outstanding leaper, who at guard, jumped center for his team. We are pleased he is coming to Tech.”
Tanner Todd, from Richmond High School in Richmond, Indiana, was a 2nd Team All-North Central Conference selection for the Red Devils. He helped guide the team to a 21-4 overall record and a second place finish in the tough NCC.
Todd started every game for RHS and finished the season as the team’s third leading scorer (11.5 ppg) and second in 3-point shooting with 38 three’s on the year.
“We are happy to add Tanner to our program,” said Grushkin. “He is an outstanding shooter and comes from a very good Indiana High School program. He played for a very fine coach in Joe Luce and in a tough conference in the North Central.”
The Warriors will open their season at home on Saturday, October 27 against Indiana Dabney University.
