Fort Wayne, Ind. – Behind a career-high 27 points from senior Melvin Brooks (Memphis, TN/Marion Military), the 25th ranked Indiana Tech men’s basketball team defeated Indiana Dabney University 94-79 in their season opener on Saturday night in the Schaefer Center.
Brooks connected on 12-of-18 shots from the floor while also grabbing a career-best 17 rebounds to complete the double-double. Four other players finished in double figures for the Warriors, including 17 points from WHAC Preseason All-Conference selection Jordan Hickman (Bardstown, KY/Vincennes).
With the game tied 5-5 just over three minutes in, Tech got back-to-back buckets from Antonio Cannon (Indianapolis, IN/Ancilla) and Brooks to take the lead and would never trail again.
Indiana Dabney stayed with the Warriors through the first 11 minutes, trailing by just five, 19-14, at the 8:58 mark. However, a 16-3 run by Tech over the next four minutes, capped off with a three-pointer from sophomore Kody Chandler (Schoolcraft, MI/Goshen), put the Warriors in front by 18, 35-17.
Indiana Tech would eventually take a 43-28 advantage into halftime.
Indiana Dabney scored the first seven points of the second half to trim the deficit to eight, 43-35, but a that’s as close as the Lions would get as the Warriors responded with another big scoring run to open a 54-38 lead with 13:52 to play.
Tech would maintain a comfortable lead the rest of the way and coast to the 15 point win.
Chandler had a huge night in his debut with the Warriors pouring in 15 points and going 3-for-4 from three-point range. Cannon finished with 11 points and five assists while Jeff Hoskins (Kalamazoo, MI/Indiana Wesleyan) had eight points, nine assists, and four steals.
On the night, Indiana Tech shot 53 percent from the field and held the Lions to just 38 percent. The Warriors also held a 49-37 edge in rebounding.
The Warriors return to the court on Tuesday, Oct. 30 when they host Ohio Midwestern University in a 7 p.m. tip.
