Grand Rapids, Mich. – Seniors Antonio Cannon (Indianapolis, IN/Ancilla) and Jordan Hickman (Bardstown, KY/Vincennes) combined for 30 points to lead the 25th ranked Indiana Tech men’s basketball game to a 54-51 win over Aquinas College on Tuesday night.
Despite playing without leading scorer and rebounder, Melvin Brooks (Memphis, TN/Marion Military) due to an injury, the Warriors snapped their two game skid. Even though Tech has dealt with several injuries and been without one of their top newcomers Justin Ikhide (Washington, DC/Emporia State) all year, the Warriors are 6-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Tech sprinted out to a 14-4 lead in the first few minutes of the game with outstanding shooting, hitting 4-of-6 shots from behind the arc.
The Warriors rode their hot shooting and strong defensive effort to a 29-18 advantage at halftime. Tech hit six first half three’s and forced the Saints into 10 turnovers while holding their opponents to 38 percent shooting from the field, including going 1-for-8 from three-point range.
Hickman gave the Warriors a 12 point edge, their largest lead of the game, early in the second period, but the Aquinas shooters began to heat up, and narrowed the gap to just one, 39-38, with 9:55 remaining in the contest.
The Saints stayed close the rest of the night and trailed by just two, 50-48, with less than a minute to go. But Jeff Hoskins (Kalamazoo, MI/Indiana Wesleyan) and Cannon knocked down their shots from the charity stripe and the defense forced Aquinas into a pair of turnovers to seal the victory.
Cannon finished with a season-high 18 points with five rebounds while Hickman added 12 points and five boards. Kody Chandler (Schoolcraft, MI/Goshen) and Henry Sidney (Monroe, LA/John Wood) chipped in seven points apiece. Chandler also had three steals.
Up next, Indiana Tech will visit crosstown rival University of Saint Francis on Saturday, Nov. 24. The Warriors will look for redemption after losing a close game to the Cougars earlier this season at home 53-50.
