Fort Wayne, Ind. – After falling to their crosstown rival University of Saint Francis at home earlier this season, the 25th ranked Indiana Tech men’s basketball team returned the favor going on the road and knocking off the Cougars 70-63 on Saturday.
Tech’s defense smothered USF in the second half, limiting the Cougars to just 26 points on 32 percent shooting, including going 1-for-16 from behind the arc.
The Warriors (7-2) were once again without leading scorer Melvin Brooks (Memphis, TN/Marion Military) due to injury but several players stepped up to fill the void, including junior Jeff Hoskins (Kalamazoo, MI/Indiana Wesleyan) who poured in a game-high 17 points.
Indiana Tech held a slim two point edge at halftime, 39-37, and would never trail in the second half.
With 3:30 remaining in the game, Kody Chandler (Schoolcraft, MI/Goshen) buried a three-pointer to extend the lead to 12, 63-51.
Saint Francis (5-2) used a 10-2 run to get within four with less than a minute remaining, but the Warriors hit their free throw down the stretch to hang on for the win.
Brooks, also the team’s leading rebounder, was missed again on the glass as USF, who had a huge size advantage, out-rebounded Tech 44-29. That advantaged added up on the scoreboard to 21 second chance points for the Cougars.
However, the Warriors forced Saint Francis into 13 turnovers on the day, while committing just three themselves, and converted those turnovers into 15 points.
Antonio Cannon (Indianapolis, IN/Ancilla) and Chandler joined Hoskins in double figures, scoring 14 and 12 points respectively while Cannon added five assists and three rebounds. Henry Sidney (Monroe, LA/John Wood) also had a big game finishing with seven points and seven boards.
The Warriors begin the first of three straight home games on Wednesday, Nov. 28 against conference opponent University of Michigan-Dearborn at 7:30 p.m.
