Fort Wayne, Ind. – In the latest edition of the 2012-13 NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball Coaches’ Top 25 Poll announced by the national office on Tuesday, the Warriors received 15 points, placing them seven spots outside the rankings at No. 32.
Last week, the Indiana Tech men’s basketball team posted a 2-0 record, picking up a pair of conference victories over University of Michigan-Dearborn and Lawrence Tech, and extended their winning streak to four.
Senior Antonio Cannon (Indianapolis, IN/Ancilla) scored a game-high 18 points in the win over Michigan-Dearborn and followed with a 16 point performance against Lawrence Tech. Junior Jeff Hoskins (Kalamazoo, MI/Indiana Wesleyan) also finished with 16 points against the Blue Devils and added five assists. Tech’s stingy defense held both opponents to less than 40 points while holding Michigan-Dearborn to 26 percent shooting and Lawrence Tech to 34 percent from the floor.
The Warriors are getting a balanced scoring effort with four players averaging double figures. Melvin Brooks (Memphis, TN/Marion Military) leads the team with 14.1 points per game followed by Cannon with 12.7. Hoskins and Jordan Hickman (Bardstown, KY/Vincennes) are both chipping in more than 10 points a night.
Defensively, the Warriors are once again at the top of the NAIA, ranking top-3 in the country in three-point field goal percent defense (0.242), scoring defense per game (54.1), and turnover margin (6.0). One of the most impressive statistics is that Tech ranks sixth in the nation in blocked shots with 46 despite playing a majority of the game with five guards. The Warriors also rank 11th in overall field goal percent defense holding the opposition to just 38 percent shooting.
The Warriors (9-2, 3-1 WHAC) welcome Concordia University (3-6, 2-2 WHAC) to the Schaefer Center on Wednesday, Dec. 5 for a conference matchup beginning at 7:30 p.m.
