Southfield, Mich. – The Indiana Tech men’s basketball team snapped its three game losing streak with a 58-50 win over WHAC foe Lawrence Tech on Saturday.
Senior Melvin Brooks (Memphis, TN/Marion Military) registered a double-double for the second straight game, and his sixth of the season, to pace the Warriors as they improved their record to 15-6 overall and 8-5 in the conference. The loss dropped the Blue Devils to 2-19 and 1-12 in league play.
Lawrence Tech held the lead for much of the first half before a jumper by Henry Sidney (Monroe, LA/John Wood) capped off a 7-2 Warrior run to give Tech its first lead of the game, 17-16, with 5:27 remaining in the period. The lead changed hands five times over the next five minutes, but the Blue Devils would take a 24-22 advantage into halftime.
Lawrence Tech outshot the Warriors 42 percent to 30 percent through the first 20 minutes, but the Warrior defense forced LTU into six turnovers while committing just one themselves.
The Blue Devils maintained their lead through the first few minutes of the second half, but the Warriors overcame the deficit quickly as Kody Chandler (Schoolcraft, MI/Goshen) buried a three-pointer and Antonio Landers (Monroe, LA/John Wood) followed with a bucket of his own to give Tech a 34-32 lead at the 13:05 mark.
Indiana Tech held a three point edge with three minutes left to play before they took control of the game with four straight points from Landers and Antonio Cannon (Indianapolis, IN/Ancilla). Jordan Hickman (Bardstown, KY/Vincennes) and Jeff Hoskins (Kalamazoo, MI/Indiana Wesleyan) would convert free throws down the stretch to help the Warriors hold on for the win.
Tech shot 48 percent from the field for the second half while holding the Blue Devils to 33 percent. The nation’s second best defense against the three limited LTU to 26 percent (4-for-15) on the afternoon from behind the arc. The Warriors were very careful with the ball turning it over just two times compared to Lawrence Tech’s 12 times.
Brooks finished with a team-high 19 points and 12 rebounds and Landers followed with 12 points.
The Warriors return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 23 in Dearborn, Michigan for a WHAC matchup with the University of Michigan-Dearborn beginning at 7:30 p.m.
