Fort Wayne, Ind. – The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference has released the postseason honors for men’s basketball and Indiana Tech’s Melvin Brooks was named to the First Team All-Conference.
Brooks helped lead the Warriors to their third straight 20-win season in 2012-13. The 6-foot-5 senior, who was a wing for the team last year, moved to center this season and was still the team’s leading scorer for much of the season averaging 14.0 points per game. He was also the league’s top rebounder hauling in 8.4 rebounds per game. Despite being undersized for the position, Brooks still recorded a team-best 34 blocks.
Brooks had seven 20-plus point games, including a career-high 28 point performance against WHAC rival Madonna University. He also notched a conference-high seven double-doubles.
Fellow seniors Antonio Cannon and Jordan Hickman were selected to the Honorable Mention All-Conference Team.
Cannon emerged as one of the WHAC’s most explosive players in his senior season. The 5-foot-10 guard led the team with 14.1 points per game and scorched the nets to the tune of a conference-best .511 shooting percentage. Cannon went 13-for-18 from the field in a win over Concordia University where he scored a career-high 28 points.
Hickman capped off his outstanding career with Indiana Tech by picking up another piece of WHAC hardware following a Third Team All-WHAC selection a season ago. The 6-foot-3 guard did it all for the Warriors. After running the point last year, Hickman’s role changed to accommodate Tech’s undersized, and more guard oriented lineup this season. Despite the changing of positions, he still averaged more than 10 points per game while ranking among the league leaders in assists with 104. Hickman was constantly guarding the opposing team’s best offensive player and was a key piece to a tough Tech defense.
In addition to his Honorable Mention All-Conference nod, Hickman was also named to the WHAC Champions of Character Team. This award goes to the player that best represents the five core values of the NAIA’s Champions of Character initiative – integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship, and servant leadership.
Named to the WHAC All-Newcomer Team was Antonio Landers. Landers was an integral part of a Warrior defense that ranked top-10 in the NAIA in three-point field goal percent defense, turnover margin, and scoring defense per game. His 57 steals paced the team and placed him top-3 in the conference. Landers also averaged 8.9 points and 3.8 rebounds per game.
Jeff Hoskins earned a spot on the WHAC All-Academic Team for his hard work and dedication in the classroom. To qualify, an athlete must achieve a 3.25 or better GPA and be a junior or above in academic standing.
