Canton, MI – The Indiana Tech men’s golf team fell to Madonna University to take fourth place in the 2011 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday at Fellows Creek Golf Club. Cornerstone University upset Davenport University to win the Championship to earn the conference’s automatic bid to the NAIA National Championships.
The Warriors opened match play on Friday as the No.3 seed against No.6 seed Aquinas College. Tech downed the Saints 4 ½ - 1 ½. Seniors Mike Kasperski (Coldwater, MI/Coldwater) and Alex Bunner (Ft. Wayne, IN/Northrop) led the Warriors in the opening. Kasperski won five and three while Bunner won three and two. Alex Odenweller (Ottoville, OH/Ottoville) and Nick Quick (Portage, IN/Portage) both picked up wins, two and one.
Tech moved on to the next round facing No.2 seeded Davenport where the Panthers edged the Warriors winning 3 ½ to 2 ½. Quick defeated DU’s Ed Naprelski two and one and fellow senior Chris McMahan (Powell, OH/Olentangy Liberty) downed Jordan Phillips two and one.
On Saturday, the Warriors took on Madonna for third place and fell to the Crusaders in a tight match 3 ½ to 2 ½. Mark Beneke (Ft. Wayne, IN/Bishop Dwenger) knocked off MU’s Justin Taurence five and three for the lone Tech win. Three pairs finished all square and Bunner and Kasperski both fell five and four.
