Gaylord, MI – The Indiana Tech men’s golf opened its 2011 season on Sunday at the inaugural Crusader Classic played at The Tradition at Treetops Resort. The Warriors sat in fourth place after the first day of competition with a 290, but fell to fifth place following a 309 on day two.
Grand View University fired a 10-under 550 to win the event with Marian University finishing 26 shots back in second place and Madonna University rounded out the top three.
Senior Mark Beneke (Fort Wayne, IN/Bishop Dwenger) led the Warriors with rounds of 73/74 finishing T-11th with a 7-over 147. Junior Ryne Gurney (Fort Wayne, IN/Bishop Luers) tied for 20th a 72 on Sunday and an 80 on Monday for a total of 152.
Freshman Tom Kocks (Fort Wayne, IN/Homestead) also finished with a 152 in his collegiate debut with rounds of 74/78. Sophomore Aaron Nelson (Rochester, IN/Rochester) followed close behind with a 153 finishing tied for 22nd.
The Warriors will be back in action on Wednesday, September 7 for the first conference Jamboree of the year hosted by Aquinas College at Highlands GC in Grand Rapids, Michigan beginning at 11 a.m.
