Avon Park, Fla. – The Indiana Tech men’s golf team finished 5th over the weekend at the 2nd Annual Warner University Golf Classic Invitational at River Greens Golf Course in Avon Park, Florida to begin their spring schedule.
The teams played a different format than usual. On the first day of the tournament the teams shot two 18-hole rounds of stroke play to determine who would be the top two teams to advance and compete in the match play championship playoff on Tuesday.
Tech sat in fifth place after shooting an opening round 311, but dropped to sixth by the end of the day despite scoring a 307 in the second round. Freshman Tom Kocks (Ft. Wayne, IN/Homestead) and senior Nick Quick (Portage, IN/Portage) led the Warriors through the first day firing a 146 (75-71) and 154 (74-80) respectively.
Match play started on day two of the tournament and the Warriors faced off with Webber University Gold for 5th place where each hole was worth two points. Tech trailed 22-14 after alternate shot play, while senior Mark Beneke (Ft. Wayne, IN/Bishop Dwenger) and freshman Nate Kolmerten (New Haven, IN/New Haven) played to an 18-18 tie in best ball. Kocks was up next in the extremely important singles position and he defeated his opponent 23-13 giving the Warriors a narrow 55-53 win.
The Warriors are back in action on March 16-17 in Portsmouth, Ohio for the Shawnee State University Invitational held at the Portsmouth Elks Country Club.
