Nicholasville, Ky. – Seniors Mark Beneke (Ft. Wayne, IN/Bishop Dwenger) and Ryan Yocom (Cable, OH/Triad) led the Indiana Tech men’s golf team to a second place finish on Monday and Tuesday at the Asbury University Spring Invitational held at Connamara Golf Course in Nicholasville, Kentucky.
The Warriors were in second place after shooting an opening round team score of 328 and trailed the leader, University of Northwestern Ohio, by 13 shots. Tech came back on day two and fired a 312, 16 shots better than the previous day. But it was not enough to keep pace with the Racers who shot a 308 to take home the top spot.
Indiana Tech finished with a two-day total of 640, 17 strokes behind winner UNOH’s 623. Brescia University took home third place with a 653.
After 18-holes, Beneke went into the clubhouse tied for the lead with a 75. Even though he carded an 80 in the second round, he still finished in third place overall with a 155.
Following an opening round 85, Yocom led the charge for the Warriors on day two firing a season-best 73. His 73 was the round’s top score and propelled him up the leaderboard to a sixth place finish with a total score of 158, and earned him his first top 10 finish of the season.
Junior Ryne Gurney (Ft. Wayne, IN/Bishop Luers) followed in a tie for 11th place with a 164 after carding rounds of 80 and 84. Freshman Tom Kocks (Ft. Wayne, IN/Homestead) bettered his opening round score of 89 by 13 shots, turning in a 76 in round two to finish in 13th place. Freshman Nate Kolmerten (New Haven, IN/New Haven) rounded out the Warrior contingent in 20th place with a 171.
The Warriors are off until April 23-24 when they travel to Grand Rapids, Michigan for the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Championship.
