Caledonia, Mich. – The Indiana Tech men’s golf team started strong at the 2012 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Championship held at Stonewater Country Club on Monday and Tuesday, sitting in second place after two rounds of play. However the Warriors were unable to catch leader Madonna University in the final round and dropped to third place with a total team score of 958.
Madonna earned the conference’s automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament in Salem, Oregon with the win. The Crusaders finished with a three-round total of 941 and Aquinas College finished second with a 956.
Davenport University's Adrian Balbas, who was the Fall Medalist, will be the WHAC representative for an individual at the national tournament.
Senior Mark Beneke (Ft. Wayne, IN/Bishop Dwenger) paced the Warriors. Beneke was the overall leader after 18-holes with a two-over 73, which tied his best round of the season. He was tied for the lead after firing a second round 77, but fell to third place following a final round score of 83 giving him a 233 total.
Freshman Tom Kocks (Ft. Wayne, IN/Homestead) earned his second top-5 finish of the season with a three-round total of 236. Kocks shot rounds of 77, 81, and 78. Junior Ryne Gurney (Ft. Wayne, IN/Bishop Luers) followed in a tie for 17th place. He had a great first two rounds, landing in a tie for fifth with an 83 and 75, but carded an 87 in the final round to finish with a total of 245.
Rounding out the Warrior contingent was Nate Kolmerten (New Haven, IN/New Haven) tied for 26th with a 252, Nick Quick (Portage, IN/Portage) in 28th with a 253, and Ryan Yocom (Cable, OH/Triad) tied for 40th with a 265.
The Warriors will wrap up the season when they host an event at Coyote Creek Golf Club in Fort Wayne on Thursday, April 26. It will be a 36-hole tournament beginning at 9 a.m.
