Fort Wayne, Ind. – The Warrior men’s golf team ended the season on a high note with a first place finish at the Indiana Tech Tournament played at Coyote Creek Golf Club on Thursday.
Taylor University shot a 310 in the first round of the two-round competition while the Warriors finished three shots back, posting a 313. The University of Saint Francis and Grace College followed with a 319 and 322 respectively.
Freshman Tom Kocks (Ft. Wayne, IN/Homestead) and Nate Kolmerten (New Haven, IN/New Haven) led the way for Tech with matching scores of 77 to tie for 5th place overall. Senior Nick Quick (Portage, IN/Portage) was right behind with a 78 tied for 8th and junior Ryne Gurney (Ft. Wayne, IN/Bishop Luers) tied for 17th carding an 81.
The second round of the day was a match play format with the top two teams from the opening round squaring off for the tournament title, where Indiana Tech went head-to-head with Taylor and defeated the Trojans 6-2.
Senior Mark Beneke (Ft. Wayne, IN/Bishop Dwenger) won 1-up with Kocks and Gurney both earning points for the Warriors with 3 & 2 wins. Quick won 2 & 1, Kolmerten won 5 & 3, and junior Jamaal Jones (Detroit, MI/Renaissance) won 1-up.
