Caledonia, Mich. – The Indiana Tech men’s golf team had a terrific final round at the 2013 WHAC Championship held at Stonewater Country Club, shooting a 292 on Tuesday to finish in third place.
The Warriors finished with a three-round team score of 901. Tech shot an opening round 302 and followed it up with a 307 before posting a 292 over the final 18-holes, which was just one stroke off their season-best single round score.
Davenport University captured the title and earned the conference’s automatic berth to the NAIA National Championship tournament with a final score of 871. Madonna University came in second with an 882.
Fresh off their record breaking outing last week, the Warriors played well right out of the gates. Through the first 18-holes Tom Kocks was tied for fourth with a two-over 73 and Tyler Willette was in 11th with a four-over 75. Zach Wetzel and Nate Kolmerten were also in the top-20 with a 76 and 78 respectively.
However, Tech’s scores dipped slightly in the second round of the day and fell behind the leaders’ pace. The Warriors would stand in fourth place in the team standings after the first 36-holes.
Willette led the charge for the Warriors on the final day as Tech tried to make their move up the standings. The freshman fired a season-low 69, just two strokes off the all-time school record, to climb the individual leaderboard all the way to fifth place. Kocks turned in another 73 followed by Kolmerten and Wetzel with matching 75’s.
Brandon Bailey finished 36th overall with a 54-hole score of 245 (82-84-79) and Ethan Galloway was right behind in 37th with a 246 (92-78-76).
Indiana Tech concluded their season on a high note posting two of the team’s best scores over the last two outings. With a team full of underclassmen, the youthful Warriors look to be in prime position to make their mark in the conference for years to come.
