Angola, Ind. – The 15th ranked Indiana Tech men’s lacrosse team looked to cool off the red-hot Liberty University Flames who entered Friday night’s showdown at Trine University’s Fred Zollner Athletic Stadium having won six straight, including two wins over Top 25 teams.
The Warriors played a strong first half and took a 6-4 lead into halftime, but Liberty, ranked 14th in this week’s MCLA DII Top 25 Poll, outscored Tech 11-5 over the final 30 minutes to prevail 15-11.
The loss dropped Indiana Tech to 0-3 on the year with all three losses coming at the hands of Top 15 ranked teams while Liberty improved to 7-0.
Goals by Nick Lichtsinn and Craig Schaepkens gave the Warriors an early 2-0 lead, but the Flames responded by scoring four of the next five goals to hold a 4-3 lead midway through the second quarter.
Towards the end of the first half, Tech capitalized on a couple man-up opportunities with goals from Josh Puckett and Dan Schaepkens to take a 6-4 advantage into halftime.
Craig and Dan Schaepkens both found the back of the net in the opening minutes of the third quarter to extend the Warrior lead to four. However, after Tech dominated possession in the first half, Liberty was finally able to get some offense going in the second.
Trailing 8-4, Liberty tallied nine unanswered goals to build a 13-8 lead.
Craig Schaepkens scored two fourth quarter goals to get Tech within four, 14-10, but time was not on their side as Liberty would hang on to defeat the Warriors.
Craig Schaepkens led the Warriors with five goals and two assists. Dan Schaepkens and Puckett contributed two scores apiece. Kyle Goehring grabbed seven groundballs and Dylan Johnston had six. Justin Famiglietti finished the night with 13 saves in goal for the Warriors
Indiana Tech will host No. 19 Washington University-St. Louis in its home opener on Saturday, Mar. 23 beginning at 3 p.m.
