Grand Rapids, Mich. – Freshman Zach St. Aubin (Manteno, IL/Bishop McNamara) gave the Indiana Tech men’s soccer team a lead they would not surrender, as the Warriors held on to defeat Davenport University 1-0 on Saturday night in the conference opener for both teams.
The win snapped Tech’s three game losing streak and improved the Warriors to 5-3 on the year and 1-0 in the WHAC. Meanwhile, Davenport’s three game win streak came to an end as the Panthers dropped to 4-4 and 0-1 in league play.
The lone goal of the match came in the 19th minute and was the first goal of the season for St. Aubin.
Davenport had a couple chances late in the contest to even the score, but came up empty. Tech’s junior keeper Reece Richardson (Halifax, England/Ryburn Valley) made a great save, tipping the ball over the net on one shot before another DU shot banged off the bottom of the crossbar but never crossed the goal line.
The Warriors were outshot in the match 13-2, but only two of Davenport’s shots were on target with Richardson stopping both.
In Tech’s five wins this season, the Warriors have posted a shutout in each one.
The Warriors return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 26 as part of an Indiana Tech soccer double header. The women’s team will play Siena Heights University at 3 p.m. with the men to follow at 7:30 p.m. against the University of Michigan-Dearborn.
