Fort Wayne, Ind. – Ninety minutes wasn’t enough to decide a winner, as the Indiana Tech men’s soccer team hosted the WHAC regular season champions, Cornerstone University, on Saturday.
However, it was Cornerstone (12-3-1, 9-1-0 WHAC) who found the back of the net in the 106th minute to hand the Warriors a heartbreaking 1-0 double overtime loss on Senior Day.
The Golden Eagles nearly won at the end of regulation, but when a shot banged off the post with less than a minute to go, the match was headed for overtime.
With only over four minutes to go in the match and heading towards a 0-0 draw, Cornerstone’s Isaac Grotenhuis broke the deadlock. CU’s Nate Weflen found him in front of the goal and Grotenhuis delivered the game-winner.
Indiana Tech, who had been playing a man-down since early in the second half, had two big opportunities in the overtime periods but was unable to convert on either chance.
The first came six minutes into the first extra period when senior Aultain Gaye (Grand Rapids, MI/Grand Rapids Central) played a cross into the box to freshman Zach St. Aubin (Manteno, IL/Bishop McNamara), but the CU keeper made a terrific save on St. Aubin’s diving header.
St. Aubin almost won it for Tech again just seconds into the second overtime period but his shot sailed over the crossbar.
Reece Richardson (Halifax, England/Ryburn Valley) had another solid day in goal, making several big saves to keep the Warriors in the game. He finished with the match with six saves.
Indiana Tech (10-5-2, 6-2-2 WHAC) will wrap up the regular season on Tuesday, Oct. 30 at No. 18 Ashford University in a non-conference match. The Warriors will then return home to host Marygrove College on Saturday, Nov. 3 in the quarterfinals of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament.
