Clinton, Iowa – Following a penalty kick in the 77th minute to take a two goal lead, No. 16 Ashford University thought they had put the game out of reach for the Indiana Tech men’s soccer team. But the Warriors would score twice in the final 3:05 of the match to earn a 2-2 draw with the Saints in the team’s regular season finale on Tuesday afternoon.
The tie was the third of the year for Tech, giving them an overall record of 10-5-3 heading into the postseason. Ashford moved to 11-2-4 on the year.
Ashford jumped on the Warriors early, scoring at the 12:37 mark and would take their 1-0 lead into halftime. The Saints outshot Tech 10-1 in the opening half, but junior keeper Reece Richardson (Halifax, England/Ryburn Valley) made five saves to keep the Warriors in the game.
The Saints kept the pressure on early in the second half, but were not able to extend the lead as Richardson played great in goal making several big stops.
However, in the 77th minute, Ashford pushed their advantage to two after converting on a penalty kick.
Tech refused to go away though and freshman Will Johnson (Ft. Wayne, IN/) gave the Warriors new life when he found the back of the net at the 86:55 mark to cut the deficit to one. Up until that point, Tech had only managed one shot on goal.
Less than two minutes later, Aultain Gaye (Grand Rapids, MI/Grand Rapids Central) scored the game-tying goal off a corner kick to send the game into overtime where the teams would eventually play to a 2-2 draw.
Richardson made a season-high 12 saves for the Warriors. Gaye’s goal was his 10th of the season while Johnson scored his fourth.
Up next, the 4th-seeded Warriors will host 5th-seeded Marygrove College to open WHAC Tournament play on Saturday, Nov. 3 at Warrior Field beginning at 7 p.m.
