Albion, MI – The Indiana Tech men’s tennis team kicked-off their spring indoor tennis season on February 19 against Albion College in Albion, MI. It was the first time for the Warriors to face the NCAA DIII Britons and their coach Scott Frew, USPTA. It was a coaches reunion as Coach Frew was on the teaching and coaching staff at Ferris State University when Indiana Tech’s Coach Moster was attending Ferris.
The Warriors got off to a good start winning 2 of the 3 doubles matches with the one loss coming in a tie-breaker. The Warriors also picked-up a win at #4 doubles – Clements/Northup, winning their first match together as a doubles team.
The match really tightened-up despite the Warriors winning 4 of 6 first sets in the singles matches. After winning the opening set in two of those matches, the Warriors lost the second set and were forced to go into a third set. The Warriors won one and lost the other.
It was not a good day for the Warriors that had to go three sets to win, as they finished only winning one of the four matches that went three sets. Senior Craig Wassell (Ft. Wayne, IN/Northrop HS) was the lone player to win his three set match and it went to a third set tie-breaker.
With the match on the line and only two matches still playing, the Warriors only had to win one of them. With one match splitting sets and going into a third, the big win and deciding match came from sophomore Warrior Kevin Madden (Waterford, MI/Waterford-Kettering HS) as he won his match in straight sets and gave the Indiana Tech Warriors the needed match and team win to defeat the Britons 5-4.
The Warriors now prepare for the completion of their indoor season against NCAA opponents – Ferris State University, DePauw University and Rose-Hulman Institute, March 11-13 in Greencastle, IN. The Warriors are 1-0 for the spring and 2-2 overall in the 2010-2011 season.
The win was the first for the Warriors to win indoors and the first for the Warriors to win before April. They had not won an indoor match in 6 attempts and were winless in early spring season matches, despite having successful seasons since the program began in 2006. The win against Albion College was a big one for the program.
