Fort Wayne, IN – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) has announced the 2011 All-Academic teams and Scholar-Athletes. The Indiana Tech men’s and women’s tennis teams were both recognized for their hard work in the classroom, with both teams receiving the All-Academic Team Award and a total of 12 players named Scholar-Athlete.
The men’s team had a team GPA of 3.51 in 2010-11 with the women’s team following close behind at 3.40. Since the men’s and women’s programs began in 2006, both teams have been in an elite group of NAIA universities earning the ITA All-Academic Team Award four times, from 2008-2011.
Eight members of the men’s team and four members of the Warrior women’s team received the ITA Scholar-Athlete Award: Mark Clements (Crawfordsville, IN/North Montgomery), Jordan Cunningham (Lubbock, TX/Coronado), Sriram Aranganathan (Chennai, India/Modern Senior Secondary), Travis Northup (LaGrange, IN/Prairie Heights), Gustavo Rodrigues (Brasilia, Brazil), Adam Steury (Ft. Wayne, IN), Craig Wassell (Ft. Wayne, IN/Northrop), Daniel Yamamoto (Sao Paulo, Brazil), Kassie Barroquillo (Wolcottville, IN), Marisol Granados (Orland, IN/Prairie Heights), Aide Martinez (Quertaro, Mexico), and Amanda Northup (Brushy Prairie, IN/Prairie Heights).
Many of the Warriors are multiple-time ITA Scholar-Athlete Award winners including four-time winners Barroquillo, Wassell, and Yamamoto. Clements, Granados , and Steury are all two-time winners.
The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All eligible student-athletes whose names appear on the NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA/CA JUCO eligibility form and have competed in one or more varsity matches must average into the GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2010 and spring 2011).
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman thorough senior year).
