Fort Wayne, Ind. – The Indiana Tech men’s tennis team started their 2012-13 season off right on Monday night, defeating Trine University 8-1 at Swinney Park to give Head Coach Gonzalo Vivas his first win with the Warriors.
The Warriors are 1-0 on the year while the Thunder fell to 0-1.
Tech took control of the match early, earning victories in all three doubles competitions. Freshman Fernando Gonzalez (Santiago, Chile) and sophomore Vinicius Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil/College of the Desert) edged Trine’s Daniel Desper and Caleb Knust at #1, 8-6. While the freshmen pair of Nicholas Tripanon (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Alberto Tenias (Villahermosa, Mexico) won 8-4 and juniors Clayton Northey (Livonia, MI/Michigan) and Sriram Aranganathan (Chennai, India) won 8-0.
The Warriors then posted wins in five of the six singles flights, with Tech’s only defeat coming at #1 as Gonzalez fell to TU’s Caleb Knust in a tight 7-5, 7-6 (3) match. Tripanon, Tenias, Silva, and Aranganathan all defeated their opponents in straight sets, and Northey battled back to win after dropping the opening set.
The Warriors return to action on Sept. 13-15 for the ITA Regional Tournament held in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
