Findlay, Ohio – The Indiana Tech track & field programs wrapped up their 2012 portion of the schedule on the campus of University of Findlay on Saturday. In a field that contained NCAA Division I Marshall, Xavier, and Dayton, plus some quality Division II programs in Findlay, Tiffin, and Hillsdale, the Warriors were the talk of the track.
Field events would be up first and the Warriors would come out jumping. Ashley Watley (Eastpoint, MI/Eastpoint) would grab the A standard in the long jump in 18-5.75 and teammate Cora Tatum (Ft. Wayne, IN/Elmhurst) would grab the B in 17-8.75. On the men’s side Darryl Marlow (Norcross, GA/Chattahoochee Tech) would also grab the A standard in 23-5.25, making him the top collegiate finisher and breaking his own school record set a week ago.
As the long jump was finishing up, heptathlete Andre Adkins (Delhi, NY/SUNY Delhi) finished the 1000 giving him a total score of 4402, which hits the National standard. Austina Smith (Jeffersonville, IN/Jeffersonville) would then hit a season best 5-4.25 in the high jump to grab the B standard. In the throws two-time All-American Aaron Baker (Howe, IN/Lakeland) would have two near misses in the weight and shot put, coming up just short of the B standard in both events. Rounding out the field events was Taylor Meredyk (Walled Lake, MI/Walled Lake Central) in the pole vault. Her jump of 11-7.75 is a lifetime-best and hits the A standard.
As things moved to the track, the Warriors would begin to flex their muscle in the sprints and hurdles. Senior Adella King (Detroit, MI/Finney) would add to her impressive career with a new personal-best 7.41 in the 60 dash as she ran away with the event. Jewel Thomas (Lathrup Village, MI/Lathrup Village) and Chloe Brooks (Elkhart, IN/Concord) would both grab B standards in the event. On the men’s side, Dontaey Paige (Ft. Wayne, IN/Heritage) would grab an A standard in 6.88 and John Broaden (Indianapolis, IN/North Central) would miss the B by 0.01 with a 6.96. Darryl Marlow would run a lifetime best 7.02.
Shayla France (Harrison Twp, MI/Le Anse Cruis) would punch her ticket in the hurdles with an 8.91. Kellie Littlejohn (Southfield, MI/Southfield) would run a 9.10 to hit the A for the second time this season. Hitting the B standard in the event were Mariama Waheed (9.15), Zalika Dixon (9.19), and Andrea Ford (9.20). Robert Rose (9.30) would grab a B standard for the men.
Events would continue on the track with other highlights including:
The men’s 4x800 of Seth Spangler (Columbia City, IN/Columbia City), Zack Johnson (Mishawaka, IN/Penn), Matt Adair (Ft. Wayne, IN/Concordia Lutheran), and Nick Radionoff (Benzie, MI/Benzie Central) would hit the B standard. Radionoff and Adair would come back and finish 1-2 in the open 800.
Brenna Conger (Packwood, IA/Pekin) would run a lifetime-best 10:36.96 in the 3000, missing the standard by one second as she ran away with the event.
Jewel Thomas, Shayla France, and John Broaden would all grab A standards in the 200 as Tech would win both the men’s and women’s 200.
Kirsten Flake (Muncie, IN/Muncie Central) and Shayne Armbrister (Roseville, MI/Roseville) both hit the A in the 400 while Chauntiel Smith hit the B standard.
Drew Mueller (Florissant, MO/McCluer North) would run 4:30.98 to grab a win in the 1500.
Both Tech teams would run away with the 4x400 relay, with the men’s B team grabbing a third place as well. For the women Zalika Dixon would put the group out front and they never looked back. The men got caught in more of a pack race and struggled to get out before a strong finish by Robert Rose on the third leg.
Coach Edgar on the meet, “The coaching staff was very pleased with the team’s effort today. With finals starting this week and lots of late nights studying, we were not sure what type of effort we would get today. The athletes did a great job of encouraging one another to get some great results today. We are really excited about how our season has begun, but now it’s up to the athletes to stay in shape over break. We have put ourselves in position to have an amazing 2013, but now we need to build on our early season momentum.“
The Warriors are off until Jan. 19 at Tiffin University in Tiffin, Ohio.
