Tiffin, Ohio – The Indiana Tech track & field teams took back to the track for the first time since mid-December and started off their 2013 campaign with a great effort at the Tiffin University Carnival.
With the Warriors only taking a partial squad, and leaving several events empty, both the men’s and women’s teams would come away with a pair of second place team finishes in the meet. The women, with 126 points, were just two points behind Ashland University and the men finished with 121 points, also behind AU.
Highlights from the meet include:
Adella King (Detroit, MI/Finney) took first in the 60-meter dash in 7.48 and finished second in the 200-meter dash in 24.67. King still ranks first in the NAIA in the 200 with her effort at Grand Valley State University in December, and she is currently second in the 60.
Katelyn Lewis (Brooklyn Park, MN/Osseo) made her season debut with a 7.63 in the 60, hitting the A standard in the process. Lewis is ranked third nationally in the event. Shayla France (Harrison Twp, MI/Le Anse Cruis) ran a lifetime-best 7.77 in the 60 to hit the B standard.
Currently the Warriors have Adella King, Katelyn Lewis, Jewel Thomas (Lathrup Village, MI/Lathrup Village), Shayla France, and Chloe Brooks (Elkhart, IN/Concord) all with standards in the 60. Additionally, all of them, along with Kirsten Flake (Muncie, IN/Muncie Central), have hit the 200 standard as well.
In the 600, Zalika Dixon (Brooklyn, NY/Fashion Industries) would come away with the event win out kicking teammate Kirsten Flake.
Cherie Gaines (Farmington Hills, MI/Farmington Hills North) would make her season debut in the 800-meter run in 2:25.43.
In the high jump, Austina Smith (Jeffersonville, IN/Jeffersonville) cleared a season-best 5-4 ½. good enough to improve her B standard to an A standard in the event.
Jeselyn Zimmerly (Topeka, IN/Westview) grabbed a season-best 11-6 and an A standard in the pole vault.
The Lady Warriors would wrap up the day with two athletes, Kellie Littlejohn (Southfield, MI/Southfield) and Shanice Goode (Richmond, VA/Meadowbrook), in the pentathlon tying with scores of 2623, falling just short of the national standard of 2700.
On the men’s side, Dontaey Paige (Ft. Wayne, IN/Heritage) would grab third place in 6.93 in the 60 dash. Paige has a faster time earlier in the year.
In the 200, John Broaden (Indianapolis, IN/North Central) ran a 22.22 to win the event. Broaden has a faster 200 from the Findlay Invite.
Austen Barnes (Ft. Wayne, IN/Vincennes) captured an event win the 600-meter run with Robert Rose (Indianapolis, IN/Kansas City) and Dareyus Person (Columbus, OH/Eastmoor) getting second and third in the 400-meter dash.
Matt Adair (Ft. Wayne, IN/Concordia Lutheran) and Nick Radionoff (Benzie, MI/Benzie Central) would both ran season-best times in the 800. Adair finished in 1:57.90 and Radionoff followed in 1:58.37.
Drew Mueller’s (Florissant, MO/McCluer North) 8:49.35 broke the freshman record in the 3000-meter run. Coming off a great freshman cross country season, Marcus Hobbs (Nineveh, IN/Indian Creek) made a strong debut in the 5000-meter run crossing the line in 15:38.72.
In the 60-meter hurdles, Robert Rose hit the A standard with a time of 8.22, setting a new collegiate personal-best.
Darryl Marlow (Norcross, GA/Chattahoochee Tech) grabbed two A standards with wins in the long jump and triple jump. Marlow has a better long jump on the season, but his leap of 46-11 in the triple jump is an indoor PR.
Coach Edgar on the meet: “The coaching staff is very pleased with our season debut coming off a pretty intense two weeks of practice. We knew we would be a step slow today with where we are in training. We are several steps ahead of where we were this time last year. It will be nice to have our entire team back next week.”
The Warriors will be back in action next weekend at the Geneva Midwest Invitational with action starting on Friday.
