Fort Wayne, IN--The Indiana Tech Warrior Volleyball team captured their 2nd straight WHAC Conference Championship and 1st undefeated conference season with a 3-1 win over #22 Madonna on Tuesday night in the Schaefer Center. The Crusaders paced the first set of the match as the Warriors struggled to connect on the attack, finishing with a hitting percentage of -.070 with 12 errors. However, some big blocks out of junior middle blocker Erika Stouder fired up the team and turned the crowd electric. The Crusaders took the first set 25-21, but the rally at the end of the set from the Warriors carried through the rest of the match.
The Warriors finished off with a 25-10, 25-19, 25-14 match, hitting a .363 percent, and totaling 16 blocks. Erika Stouder led the Warriors with 14 kills and 7 blocks. Samantha Larson put up 13 kills and Ashley Hamilton had another double-double with 11 kills and 20 digs. Melanie Forman set the pace with 45 assists on the night and Amber Birky added 6 blocks, 7 kills, and 11 digs.
Libero, Kayla Hartman, a sophomore from Northrop High School, also had a big night as she led the team in digs with 24, helping her break the single season record. (The previous record was set by Tiffany Jenkins in 2006 with 528.) Hartman had 520 digs going into the Madonna match. She now has 544 going into the remainder of the season. Hartman also set a single match record at Cornerstone this year with 37 digs in one match. The Warriors will be back in the Schaefer Center on Thursday, Nov. 5 for senior night against Indiana Wesleyan and the last regular season match of 2009.
As Conference Champs the Warriors will host the WHAC Tournament Finals on November 13 and 14. Semi-final matches are scheduled for 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Friday and the championship to take place at noon on Saturday.
