SIOUX CITY, Iowa - Unseeded Indiana Tech and third-seeded Northwestern (Iowa) were victorious in Pool C Thursday in the final day of pool play action at the NAIA Volleyball National Championship Presented by Siouxland Sports Medicine Foundation in the Tyson Events Center/Gateway Arena. Indiana Tech and Northwestern advance into single elimination action beginning Friday. Friday and Saturday’s action will be video-streamed at www.watchnaia.com.
Indiana Tech earned a spot in the single elimination bracket with a 19-25, 25-19, 25-23, 25-20, win over Shawnee State (Ohio). The win gave the Warriors a 2-1 record in the pool, while Shawnee State finished 0-3. Four players finished with double-figure kills for Indiana Tech, led by Ashley Hamilton with 15, followed by Amber Birky with 12, Jasmine Battle with 11 and Samantha Larson with 10. Melanie Forman handed out 54 of the Warriors 57 assists. Defensively, Indiana Tech had a 17-dig performance from Kayla Harman and a 12-dig showing from Hamilton. Shawnee State was led by Heather Koehler with 21 kills.
The Warriors will enter single elimination action with a 35-9 record. Shawnee State’s season comes to a close with a mark of 31-6.
Northwestern made quick work of 10th-seeded Biola (Calif.) to secure its place in single elimination action, sweeping the Eagles, 28-26, 25-20, 25-16. The Red Raiders concluded pool play with a 3-0 record, while Biola bows out with a mark of 1-2. Hillary Hanno again led the way for Northwestern with 12 kills, followed by Randa Hulstein with 10. Kaitlin Beaver led the offensive and defensive fronts, dishing out 29 assists and coming up with 12 digs. Nicolette Mather had eight kills for Biola.
The win pushes Northwestern’s season record to 36-2, while Biola’s campaign ends with a mark of 23-15. Single elimination pairings will be posted Thursday at the conclusion of pool play.
