SIOUX CITY, Iowa - Fifth-seeded Azusa Pacific (Calif.) defeated 12th-seeded Indiana Tech in straight sets, 25-20, 29-27, 25-11, Friday to advance to the quarterfinals of the NAIA Volleyball National Championship Presented by Siouxland Sports Medicine Foundation in the Tyson Events Center/Gateway Arena.
The Cougars improve to 28-8 on the season and will face fourth-seeded Concordia (Calif.) (29-7) at 5:45 p.m. Friday. The match will be video-streamed at www.watchnaia.com
and live stats will be available here. Indiana Tech’s season comes to a close with a record of 35-10.
Azusa Pacific’s Jill Baker dominated the match at the net with 21 kills on 42 swings (.452). Nine of the Cougars who saw action in the match had at least one kill, teaming together for a .303 hitting percentage. Raechel Jones and Sophie Burns conducted Azusa Pacific’s offensive charge, dishing out 25 and 16 assists, respectively. Providing the solid defense was Robin Portela with 15 digs.
Indiana Tech was held to a .068 clip in the match and committed 27 hitting errors in the loss. Ashley Hamilton provided the Warriors with 11 kills, but was plagued with seven miscues. Melanie Forman had 24 assists, while the defense was led by Kayla Hartman and Kelsea Nova with 14 and 10 digs each. Three Warriors notched an ace: Jasmine Battle, Samantha Larson and Hartman.
