Fort Wayne, Ind. – The Indiana Tech women’s basketball team was picked eighth in this year’s Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Preseason Poll voted on by the coaches, and announced by the league office on Wednesday.
After sharing the regular season championship last year, Concordia University and Davenport University were picked to finish at the top of the conference again in 2012-13. Concordia received seven first place votes while Davenport garnered five.
First year head coach Jessie Biggs is taking over an Indiana Tech team that finished 14-17 overall and 6-12 in the conference a season ago. Biggs and her staff will be implementing a new system, offensively and defensively, this season, but expect the Warriors to compete in every game.
In addition to the preseason poll, league coaches also made their Preseason All-Conference Team selections and Indiana Tech senior Simone Russell (Peoria, IL/Illinois Central) earned a spot on the team.
Russell, who transferred in from Illinois Central College at the beginning of last year, had an impressive first season with the Warriors. The 5-11 forward was the team’s second leading scorer averaging 10.8 points per game and was also one of the team’s top rebounders, pulling down 4.7 boards a night.
During a five game stretch where Tech was without All-Conference performer Yasmine Coleman, Russell stepped up and played huge for the Warriors averaging almost 19 points per contest, including a season-high 28 in a win over Harris-Stowe State University.
The Lady Warriors tip off their season at Marian University in Indianapolis, Indiana at the Marian Tip-Off Classic on Nov. 2-3 before returning home on Nov. 6 to host Grace College in their home opener.
