Grand Rapids, Mich. – The Indiana Tech women’s basketball team went on the road to Aquinas College on Tuesday night and trailed by just two with 2:30 remaining, but a late run by the Saints sent the Lady Warriors back with a 73-64 loss.
The setback dropped Tech to 1-5 on the year and 1-1 in the WHAC while Aquinas bumped its record to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
The Warriors and Saints fought back and forth in the first half with the lead changing hands four separate times along with six ties.
Ulyssia Richmond (Temple Hills, MD/Riverdale Baptist) scored five points as part of a 7-2 run to give the Lady Warriors their largest lead of the game 29-24 with 5:27 remaining in the first period.
Aquinas battled back and tied the score 35-35 in the waning seconds of the half, but a last second three-pointer by Rachael Kruse (Ft. Wayne, IN/Homestead) gave Tech a 38-35 edge at the break.
Early in the second stanza, the Warriors held a 42-40 lead, but a triple from AQ’s Liza Flewelling gave the Saints a lead they wouldn’t give up.
The three sparked a 13-2 run by the home team to take a 53-44 lead at the 13:23 mark.
Aquinas maintained a comfortable cushion for the next four minutes before Tech began to narrow the gap.
A bucket from Richmond with 2:45 left in the game got the Warriors within two, 62-60, but the Saints would end the night on a 13-4 run, aided by solid free throw shooting down the stretch to clinch the win.
Tech struggled from the field, connecting on just 37 percent of their shots and only hitting one of 16 three-point attempts, but went a perfect 13-for-13 from the free throw line. Aquinas finished shooting 40 percent from the field.
Richmond paced the Warriors with 17 points, five rebounds, and three assists followed by Kaneisha Bass (Detroit, MI/Lincoln Trail) with 12 points and a team-high seven boards. Kruse and Shallante Clements (Detroit, MI/Cass Technical) chipped in nine points apiece.
Indiana Tech travels to Upland, Indiana for a non-conference clash with the 22nd ranked Trojans of Taylor University on Saturday, Nov. 24.
