Fort Wayne, Ind. – Junior Rachael Kruse (Ft. Wayne, IN/Homestead) delivered a huge three-pointer to tie the game with seven seconds left, however the University of Michigan-Dearborn hit a half-court heave just before the final buzzer to escape with a 75-72 victory over the Indiana Tech women’s basketball team on Wednesday night.
The Lady Warriors slipped to 1-7 with loss and 1-2 in league play while Michigan-Dearborn improved to 2-4 overall and 2-1 in the WHAC.
With the game tied 14-14 midway through the first half, Tech used a 16-4 run to open up a 12 point advantage, their largest lead of the game.
The visiting Wolves clawed their way back into the game though and got a put-back bucket as the first half clock expired to take the lead for the first time, 36-34.
Michigan-Dearborn started the second half strong and expanded its lead to eight, 49-41, at the 13:33 mark.
However, Chelsea Carradine (Redford, MI/Thurston) and Ulyssia Richmond (Temple Hills, MD/Riverdale Baptist) scored four points each over the next minute as part of an 8-0 Warrior run to tie the game.
Over the next seven minutes, the lead changed hands several times before Michigan-Dearborn scored five straight points to pull ahead 66-62 with 4:27 left on the clock.
The Lady Warriors refused to back down though and fought back to grab a 69-68 edge with under a minute to go.
Michigan-Dearborn would regain a three point lead setting up Kruse’s clutch triple in the closing seconds, but UMD’s Kelly DeFauw spoiled the night by draining a half-court shot at the buzzer.
Kruse finished with 19 points and eight rebounds to lead the Warriors while Richmond followed with 18 points. Senior Kaneisha Bass (Detroit, MI/Lincoln Trail) added a season-high 14 points and six rebounds. Freshman Rayana Villalpando (Bellflower, CA/Downey) had a big night recording nine points, seven assists, and six boards.
Indiana Tech returns to the court on Saturday, Dec. 1 when the welcome conference newcomer Lawrence Tech to the Schaefer Center in a 1 p.m. tip.
