Fort Wayne, Ind. – The Indiana Tech women’s basketball started 2013 off right with a conference win over WHAC newcomer Marygrove College 88-66 on Wednesday night in the Schaefer Center.
The Lady Warriors, who have now won four of their last five, improved their record to 6-10 overall and 4-4 in the conference. The loss dropped the Mustangs to 2-13 on the year and 0-8 in league play.
Tech trailed 12-9 just over six minutes into the contest, but juniors Chelsea Carradine (Redford, MI/Thurston) and Rachael Kruse (Ft. Wayne, IN/Homestead) fueled a 14-0 run to give the Warriors an 11 point lead midway through the first half.
After Marygrove got within eight with 1:40 remaining in the opening period, a late scoring spurt gave Tech a 44-29 advantage at halftime.
The Warriors quickly pushed their lead to 25 in the second and rolled past the Mustangs for their third consecutive win.
Kruse dropped a team-high 21 points with seven rebounds and Carradine recorded the double-double with a season-high 20 points and 11 boards.
Kaneisha Bass (Detroit, MI/Lincoln Trail) and Ulyssia Richmond (Temple Hills, MD/Riverdale Baptist) chipped in 13 points apiece while Bass just missed a double-double ripping down nine rebounds. Sabine Filippovica (Linibazi, Latvia/Independence) matched her season-high with seven points and handed out four assists.
Up next, the Lady Warriors travel to Lima, Ohio for WHAC action against the University of Northwestern Ohio on Saturday, Jan. 5 beginning at 1 p.m.
