Jacksonville, Ill. – The Indiana Tech women’s golf team opened their 2012 season with a bang over the weekend with a trio of golfers grabbing the top three spots on the leaderboard, propelling the team to a 10-shot win at the Illinois College Fall Invitational played at the Links of Jacksonville.
The Warriors held a two-stroke lead overnight following a 341 on a very wet and rainy day one, and played just as well through the inclement weather on day two with another 341.
Senior Megan Garrison (Cutler, Ind./Carroll) picked up right where she left off last season by winning the two-day event by five strokes. Garrison fired an opening round 79 to pace the field and came right back with a matching 79 on day two to shoot a 158 two-day total.
Freshman Lizzie Campbell (Sydney, Australia/Sceggs Redlands) had an outstanding collegiate debut finishing second overall with a 163. She sat one shot back of Garrison after carding an 80 on Saturday and shot an 83 on Sunday. Sophomore Julia Browning (Cantrall, IL/Athens) was right behind her in a tie for third place with a 164 after rounds of 81 and 83.
Also finishing in the top-10 for Tech was freshman Rachel George (Gahanna, OH/Gahanna Lincoln). George tied for seventh with a 171 (85/86).
Rounding out the Warrior contingent was sophomore Haley Larson (Enon, OH/Greenon) in 16th with a two-day total of 175, junior Christina Mettert (New Haven, IN/New Haven) in 34th with a 185, and senior Katie Clouse (Marion, IN/Grace) in 41st with a 187.
The Warriors return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 4 in Caledonia, Michigan for the first WHAC Jamboree of the season hosted by Davenport University at Stonewater Country Club. The players tee off at 10 a.m.
