Rome, Ga. – For the second straight season, the Indiana Tech women’s lacrosse team will play for the National Women’s Lacrosse League Tournament Championship after defeating Shorter University 20-16 in semifinals on Friday.
The win bumped the Warriors to 14-4 overall while Shorter dropped to 13-7.
The Warriors started fast, building a 5-0 lead less than 10 minutes into the game but Shorter answered with three straight goals to get within two midway through the first half.
Sophomore Kendall Guthrie (Lake Oswego, OR/Lake Oswego) then scored two of her career-high eight goals as part of a 3-0 Warrior run, but again the Hawks answered with three of their own to make it 8-6 with 6:08 left in the half.
The two teams battled back and forth the rest of the period and Tech took a slim 10-8 edge into the break.
Shorter scored three of the first four goals in the second half to knot the game 11-11 at the 25:36 mark. However Guthrie took over, leading the Warriors on a 6-1 run, scoring four times to give Tech a 17-12 lead they would not relinquish.
The Hawks had one last rally in them scoring four of the next five goals, cutting the deficit to two, 18-16, with just over five minutes remaining. But Guthrie and junior Nikki Rottell (Plymouth, MI/Plymouth) dashed any hopes of a comeback with two late goals to put the game away.
Guthrie finished with eight goals and four groundballs to lead the Warriors. Junior Clea Endres (Ft. Wayne, IN/Homestead) chipped in three goals and three groundballs while fellow junior Nicole Johnson (Osceola, IN/Penn) had three asssits. Junior goalie Ashley Elvey (Holland, OH/St. Ursula) came up big for Tech making 21 saves on the day.
Indiana Tech will play Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) tomorrow, April 21, in the 2012 NWLL Championship game at 4:30 p.m. The Warriors defeated SCAD 20-14 in the only meeting between the teams in the regular season.
