Fort Wayne, Ind. – The Indiana Tech women’s soccer team took a commanding lead early in Wednesday’s conference opener with Siena Heights University, scoring three goals within a five minute span. However, the Saints battled back in the second half, cutting the lead to one but the deficit was just too much to overcome as the Warriors prevailed 3-2.
The win was the fourth straight for the Warriors as they ran their record to 9-2 on the season and 1-0 in league play. The loss dropped Siena Heights to 5-2-1 and 0-1 in the WHAC.
Indiana Tech nearly found the back of the net in the first few minutes when freshman Tori Singstock (Southgate, MI/Southgate Anderson) found Megan Perrey (Avon, IN/Avon) in front of the net, but Perrey’s shot went just wide of the goal.
The Warriors would capitalize on their next opportunity though. After a flip throw-in by senior Rikki Singstock (Southgate, MI/Southgate Anderson) sailed into the box, junior Alex Field (Gilberts, IL/Hampshire) headed home the ball for the game’s first goal at the 14:42 mark.
Less than four minutes later, at the 18:50 mark, Field found Tori Singstock who blew past her defender and slipped a shot by the SHU keeper to put Tech on top 2-0.
Perrey capped off the Warrior scoring run less than a minute later when she banged in a shot from junior Natalie Zimmerman (Berkley, MI/Berkley). Perrey has been red-hot scoring six times in the last five games.
Indiana Tech would take their 3-0 lead into halftime.
Siena Heights picked up the pace though in the second half, playing with a sense of urgency and put the pressure on often.
The Saints were finally able to breakthrough in the 69th minute. Siena Heights would add another goal in the 88th minute to get within one. Junior keeper Jordan Roell (Guilford, IN/East Central) made a great diving stop on one shot, but the rebound rolled out right to a Saint player who tapped it in.
The Warrior defense played tough in a very physical final 20 minutes, and were able to hold on to their lead and a seal a huge conference win.
Siena Heights outshot Tech 12-6 in the second half and 18-12 for the match. The Saints also held the edge in corner kicks 6-5.
Roell finished with nine saves on the afternoon while Perrey and Tori Singstock each had three shots and a goal.
The Warriors return to the field for more conference action on Saturday, Sept. 29 at Aquinas College in a 1 p.m. start.
