BATTLE CREEK, MI – On Thursday, the 2012 WHAC Softball Honors were released and several Warriors were honored with All Conference selections.
Junior Martika Armstead (Richmond, IN / Northeastern HS) and freshman Jessica Cotton (Redondo Beach, CA / Redondo Union) were named All-Conference. The duo was 2-3 in the batting order and complimented each other very well. Armstead was second on the team with an on base percentage of .408 followed by Cotton with .404. Armstead used her speed in the outfield to cover center field and led the conference in stolen bases with 29. She also led the Warriors in hitting (.383 BA), runs (55), triples (4) and hits (82) which was a Warrior single season record.
Cotton displayed her versatility playing third and catcher, she also demonstrated some pop at the plate leading the Warriors in doubles (18) and tied for second on the team with home runs (5) with a team high .533 slugging percentage.
Junior Sam Berrios (Wadsworth, IL / Warren Twp. HS), senior Megan Groce (Milford, MI / Milford HS), and sophomore Patrice Suplicki (Stevens Point, WI / Stevens Point Area HS) were named Honorable Mention. Berrios was third in the WHAC for innings pitched (196.2) and fashioned a 2.42 ERA, good enough for fourth on the Warrior All-Time Single Season Record for ERA. She struck out a career high 101 batters and she is second on the Warrior Career Wins with 36.
Groce led the Warriors in home runs (8) and RBI’s (47). She was second on the team for hits (56), walks (26) and slugging percentage (.525). Groce was also an accomplished infielder, playing third, shortstop and second throughout the season. She led the Warriors defensively with 141 assists.
Suplicki started 56 games for the Warriors this season and hit .262 with nine doubles. She was fourth on the team with 45 hits and tied for third with 27 RBIs.
Sophomore Baily Tom (Monroe, MI / Jefferson HS) was named to the Champions of Character Team. The team is comprised of athletes who best exemplify the five core character value of Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Servant Leadership and Sportsmanship.
The Warriors had 10 athletes named to the All-Academic team which was the most by any school in the WHAC. Included on this list were Callie Busch (Jefferson, OH / Jefferson HS), Amber Edmundson (Portland, IN / Jay County HS), Megan Groce, Casey Prince (Severn, MD / Mount De Sales), Andrea Sexsmith (Brownstown, MI / Woodhaven HS), Katelynn Hamilton (Jefferson, OH / Jefferson HS), Allison Belcher (St. Charles, MO / Francis Howell HS), Courtney Johnson (Fort Wayne, IN / Concordia HS), Tori Kilps (New Berlin, WI/Eisenhower), and Baily Tom.
To be selected as All Academic, you must be a junior or above in academic standing and have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or better based on a 4.0 scale.
