Fort Wayne, Ind. – The Indiana Tech softball team will begin their 2013 campaign on Saturday, Feb. 16 when they play against No. 15 Lindsey Wilson College, No. 13 Reinhardt University, and Cumberland University at the Martin Methodist Meltdown in Pulaski, Tennessee.
The Warriors finished last season with a record of 25-34, and 6-8 in the WHAC, as head coach Becky Norris collected her 200th career win in her eighth season at the helm.
The softball team will be looking to replace some individuals who were lost to graduation, but a strong core of returning players along with a good recruiting class will keep the Warriors in the hunt for the top spot of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference.
Gone are Meagan Groce, Callie Busch, and Casey Prince. Groce was an Honorable Mention All-WHAC infielder and had a team high of 47 RBI. Busch was a key defender as well as a tough battle for pitchers at the plate finishing the season with 11 RBI, three doubles and a homerun. Prince, who started 48 games a season ago, collected 11 RBI and five doubles in addition to being a solid defender.
Returning for the Warriors are seniors Sam Berrios (Wadsworth, IL/Warren Twp) and Martika Armstead (Richmond, IN/Northestern). Berrios was an Honorable Mention All-WHAC pitcher with a 15-17 record with a 2.60 ERA. Armstead was a NFCA First Team All-Region and First Team All-WHAC selection with a .387 batting average. She also was the team leader in hits, runs scored, and triples.
Another NFCA First Team All-Region and First Team All-WHAC selection was Jessica Cotton (Redondo Beach, CA/Redondo Union). Starting in 56 games as a freshman, Cotton is looking to build on her successful first season with the Warriors as she finished with a .333 batting average and 33 RBI. Another key returner is junior Honorable Mention All-WHAC Patrice Suplicki (Stevens Point, WI/Stevens Point Area) who hit .262 with 27 RBI.
The Warriors are adding some new faces to the lineup in freshman OF/C Sofia Johantgen (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA/Palos Verdes HS), freshman pitcher Jenevie Rivas (Whittier, CA/La Mirada HS), freshman pitcher Alli Watson (Tecumseh, MI/Tecumseh HS), and freshman infielder Cortney Bingham (Woodbridge, VA/CD Hylton).
Indiana Tech’s first home game is on Mar. 6 when the Trojans of Taylor University come to town. The Warriors will also be making their annual trip to Clermont, Florida were they will participate in the NTC Tournament Mar. 21-26.
Upon returning from the NTC Tournament the Warriors will start conference play when they host a doubleheader against Madonna University on Apr. 6.
