Lebanon, Tenn. – The Indiana Tech softball team opened their 2013 season on Thursday dropping a pair of games at Cumberland University. The Warriors fell 4-2 in the first game before losing the second 7-3.
Tech struck first in the opener when Sara Soares singled up the middle to bring around JC Plezbert in the top of the second inning. Cumberland answered though an inning later plating three runs, all with two outs.
After the Bulldogs tacked on another run in fifth, the Warriors cut the deficit back to two, 4-2. Patrice Suplicki laced a two out single. She promptly stole second and came around to score on a base hit by Kelsey Kline. However, Tech would be retired in order in the seventh to end the game.
Plezbert went 2-for-3 with a double and triple. Sam Berrios took the loss going 6.0 innings giving up four runs, three earned, on nine hits while fanning two.
In game two, the Warriors once again jumped out to an early lead. Martika Armstead singled to lead off the game and would eventually score on an RBI groundout from Soares.
Cumberland got the run right back in the home half of the first before adding three more runs in the second.
Trailing 5-1 in fifth, the Warriors capitalized on a Bulldog error to cut into the CU lead. Taylor Craven scored on a throwing error and freshman Sofia Johantgen drove in Armstead with a single to left to make it a 5-3 game.
The Bulldogs added single runs though in the fifth and sixth to come away with the 7-3 victory.
Plezbert continued to swing a hot bat finishing with two more hits. Armstead also collected a pair of hits and scored twice. Jenevie Rivas was hit with the loss after tossing 4.0 innings and surrendering five runs, four earned, on six hits. Alli Watson threw 2.0 innings of relief giving up one earned run.
The Warriors are right back in action on Friday when they face the Bulldogs again at Martin Methodist College. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m.
